Tunnelling has been a core activity since the company's formation. We retain our expertise in traditional tunnelling methods for short drives, temporary works or specific site conditions but nearly all tunnelling is now carried out by mechanised means.
We have made major investments in tunnel boring machines (TBM) and remote controlled pipejacking systems that offer greater efficiencies and safer environments for operatives.We have a range of tunnelling machines suitable for pre-cast concrete segmental tunnel linings, enabling us to deliver mechanised solutions for a full range of ground conditions, with tunnel diameters from 600 mm upwards.
Byzak's largest tunnelling contract to date was a £36m project to construct 10 km of interceptor sewers in Cardiff, for Dwr Cymru / Welsh Water. This included 2.5 km of 2.44 m diameter, segmental tunnel, incorporating a single 1.5 km long drive beneath the Rhymney Estuary. The largest tunnel we have installed to date was a 4.5 m ID interceptor / storage sewer at Ayr, for Scottish Water.
We also offer expertise in the procurement and installation of equipment for projects large and small. Our multidisciplinary team is adaptive, inventive and highly effective at meeting our clients' needs. We have the skill sets and resources to manage major project installations that require complex controls and state of the art technology. A dedicated installation and construction team is assigned to each project. This team is selected from our site-based staff who work under the guidance of qualified site supervisors. When their work is completed they hand over to the commissioning team, who work through specific testing procedures. At this point, plant optimisation may be carried out.By the time of handover, the commissioning team will have compiled all relevant documentation and is ready to pass this on to the client ready for final review and acceptance.
